For my final project, I am animating the movie How the Grinch stole Christmas to be under 1 ish minutes. This week I have completed 10 scenes and am up to the point where Cindy Lou is about to see the Grinch. Surprisingly I’m on schedule for this short amount of time. I would say I’m a bit more than halfway done. The only hard part is finding time in addition to have to stitch the clips all together and create a google slide explaining everything. My plan is to finish the animation before Friday and give myself the weekend to complete the presentation.
Once again I made some last-minute decisions. What I failed to realize is that I only have 2 weeks left and Elf is more intricate than I thought. Not only that but someone on YouTube has already taken on a very similar challenge. Although these fallbacks have abled me to make some changes to my final project. For one the new movie I decided upon is How the Grinch stole Christmas. This movie is far more simple in length and scenes.
During thanksgiving break, I took one day to start planning/animating. So far I’ve finished up to the part before the Grinch prepares for his raid. It will definitely be close but I believe if I dedicate a day a week to work on this I will finish on time. This week I started planning out my final project. After watching this TikTok I got some inspiration. The TikTok was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone but animated in under a minute. I thought that idea was great so I will base my final animation on it. Due to the holiday season, I decided to animate one of my favorite movies, Elf. This week I also created google slides that will be used to present my project. In the slide, I added the first step of my final project and that’s the planning phase. I obviously don’t have the time or skill to quickly animate the whole movie. So I eliminated some scenes to make the process easier. I made sure to base it off of the Story Circle so that it still makes sense.
For the past two weeks, I have been working on this short clip. In week seven I animated the first three scenes and then did the last three the following week. My first measure in doing this was coming up with what I wanted to do. I was just going to continue off of week six but I decided I should be moving forward faster. Calvin and Hobbes is a comic that I love and can be animated quite easily. After looking up six reference photos, all from different perspectives I just added layers until the characters left the screen and then continued with the next segment. In the video below I placed in an example of the process. After all the scenes were together I edited small movement and added color. Almost halfway done! My plan for this week and next is to make loops for other sports (Snowboarding, Rock climbing, Kayaking) and then piece them together so they look more cinematic. With school and other activities, I might just shorten the plan though. After week 6 I will start preparing for my final project. First by creating a storyboard. And then just working and editing one scene a week. For this week I went one step up from the last project. I completed this 2-second clip after 90 minutes of trial and error. That's a lot of time but I've learned a valuable lesson, not to waste my time drawing/envisioning it myself. If you take a look at the video you can see me explain the steps. I didn’t include the process because even if I sped it up, it would be too long. |
